The GED passing score is 145 in each of the four subjects, on a scale of 100 to 200. You need 145 or more in Math, Language Arts (RLA), Science and Social Studies. Scores are not averaged, so a high score in one subject cannot make up for a low score in another.

The GED passing score is 145 in each of the four subjects, on a scale of 100 to 200. You need 145 or more in Math, Language Arts (RLA), Science and Social Studies. Scores are not averaged, so a high score in one subject cannot make up for a low score in another. GED score levels for each subject
Below Passing (100-144): This subject is not passed yet. You can retake just this subject. Many students who miss by a few points say a focused review of their weakest skills got them over the line.
Passing (145-164): You met the passing standard for this subject. Every pass counts the same toward your credential, and passing scores on the current test do not expire at the national level (states may set their own rules).
GED College Ready (165-174): GED.com says a score of 165-174 means you have the skills to start college-level courses and may be exempt from placement tests or remedial (non-credit) courses. Each college decides, so check with its admissions office.
GED College Ready + Credit (175-200): GED.com says a score of 175-200 shows skills that could qualify for up to 10 college credit hours in total (3 math, 3 science, 3 social studies, 1 humanities), depending on the college. The college decides whether to accept it.
GED score checker
The free checker on this page reads one to four official subject scores (whole numbers from 100 to 200). It shows each subject’s level, points to go to 145, whether the credential requirement is met (all four at 145 or more), and the four-subject total with what that total can and cannot tell you.
Is 735 a passing GED score?
On the current four-subject test, a total of 735 means your subjects averaged about 184. That is well above 145. But you pass the GED test subject by subject, not by total. You pass only if each subject is 145 or more. A total of 735 could be 200, 200, 200 and 135, which would not pass.
Older GED tests used a different scale. For example, the New Jersey Department of Education says that on the 2002-series test you had to pass all portions and reach a total score of 2250. GED Testing Service policy says scores from older series cannot be combined with the current test, so all four current subjects must be passed. Ask your state adult education office about an old score.
The total is just the four subject scores added together. It runs from 400 to 800.
580 is the total of four minimum passing scores (4 × 145).
A total below 580 means at least one subject is below 145.
From 745 up, every subject must be 145 or more, because no subject can be above 200.
Between 580 and 744, the total alone cannot tell you. Look at each subject.
What is a good GED Ready score?
GED Ready is the official practice test, written by the makers of the real exam and designed to predict whether you will pass. Many students in online forums say it was close to their real score. Some say their real score was lower, most often in math and science. A few points of cushion above 145 gives you room for a harder test day.
Likely to Pass (145-200): Book the real test for this subject soon. The official Student Handbook suggests testing within about two weeks. Testing online? You must have a green score in that subject within the last 60 days, so schedule inside that window. If your score is only a few points above 145, keep reviewing the skills on your GED Ready score report until test day.
Too Close to Call (134-144): Use the study list on your GED Ready score report to pick your three or four weakest skills. Practise those skills with the labs and lessons below, then do a mixed, timed set. Take another GED Ready (each version has different questions) before you book.
Not Likely to Pass (100-133): Build the foundations first. Make a week-by-week plan with the study plan builder. Take the free GEDPilot diagnostic to see which skills need you most. Work through the lessons for this subject, then retake GED Ready when your practice is steady.
GED Ready is half the length of the real test and timed: Math 60, RLA 95, Science 47 and Social Studies 35 minutes.
The RLA extended response is not scored on GED Ready.
Scores usually post within 24 hours.
To test online, you need a green (Likely to Pass) GED Ready score in that subject within the last 60 days.
Some states also ask for a GED Ready score before you test at a test center or to get free testing. Check your state’s rules.

Can you convert percent correct into a GED score?
GED Testing Service does not publish a chart that turns percent correct into a GED score.
Your score comes from points earned, not the number of questions right. Some questions are worth more than one point.
Each test form is a little different, and the points are put on the 100-200 scale for you.
There is no penalty for wrong answers, so answer every question.
GEDPilot practice percentages are study signals. They show what to review. They are not official scores or predictions.
When do GED scores come out, and what does the report show?
Scores usually post within 24 hours (often the same day), and sometimes take up to 3 business days. You get an email when they post.
You see them under My Scores on GED.com, in an Enhanced Score Report.
The report has four parts: My Scores, How I Can Score Higher (a personal study plan), What My Score Means, and My Written Answers.
Your official transcript shows scaled scores only, not raw points.
If you score 165 or more in any subject, you can also get an ACE Learning Evaluations transcript, provided through Credly.
How does the essay count toward the RLA score?
The extended response makes up about 20% of the RLA score, and GED Testing Service recommends that everyone answer it.
It is scored on three traits, each from 0 to 2: arguments and evidence; development and organization; and clarity and command of standard English.
Spelling is not scored as long as the words are understandable.
An essay that only copies the passages, is off topic, or is blank earns a zero.
You can ask for an RLA essay rescore within two months of your test date. GED.com lists a $50 fee per essay (checked 26 October 2026; confirm on GED.com), refunded only if the score changes.
What if I did not pass one subject?
Each subject is scored on its own. You retake only the subject you did not pass.
At a test center, you can retake a subject twice with no wait. After a third try, you wait 60 days before each new attempt. States may add rules.
Online, you get one retake with no wait. After two online attempts, you wait 60 days.
At US test centers, GED Testing Service waives its own fee on retakes of a failed subject (up to two discounted retakes, used within 12 months). State and test-center fees may still apply, and online retakes are not discounted. Check your state’s price page.
Want College Ready on a subject you already passed? Retesting for a higher score needs approval (email help@ged.com) and is only allowed at a test center.
Your next step
Write down each subject score you have, official or GED Ready.
Passed a subject? It is done. Put your energy into the subjects still below 145.
Before you book, aim for Likely to Pass (green) on GED Ready in that subject.
No GED Ready yet? Start with the free GEDPilot diagnostic to see which skills need you most.
Book one subject at a time if that suits your life. You do not have to take all four at once.
Questions and answers
What is the passing score on the GED test? The passing score is 145 in each of the four subjects, on a scale of 100 to 200. You need 145 or more in Math, RLA, Science and Social Studies to earn your high school equivalency. Scores are not averaged across subjects. States may set a higher passing score, but none may set a lower one.
Older GED series used a different scale, so check which test your score came from.
Is 580 a good GED score? 580 is the total of four minimum passing scores (4 × 145). If all four of your subject scores are 145 or more, you passed, and every pass counts toward your credential. But a total of 580 made of 160, 150, 140 and 130 does not pass, because two subjects are under 145. Look at each subject, not the total.
What is a good GED Ready score? On GED Ready, the official practice test, 145 to 200 is Likely to Pass, 134 to 144 is Too Close to Call, and 100 to 133 is Not Likely to Pass. To test online you need a Likely to Pass (green) score in that subject within the last 60 days. Many students like a few points of cushion above 145 before they book.
Can I go to college with a 145 GED score? A score of 145 or more in all four subjects earns your high school equivalency, whatever the exact numbers. Each college sets its own admission rules, so ask its admissions office what it needs. A score of 165 or more in a subject may also let you skip placement tests or remedial (non-credit) courses there.
Can I turn my percent correct into a GED score? No. GED Testing Service does not publish a percent-to-score chart. Your score comes from points, some questions are worth more than one point, and each test form is a little different. GEDPilot practice percentages are study signals, not predictions of an official score.
Can I convert my GED score to a GPA? GED scores are scaled scores from 100 to 200 per subject, not grades, so GEDPilot does not convert them to a GPA. If a college or employer asks for a GPA, ask how they read GED scores. Your official transcript lists each subject and its score.
If I fail one subject, do I retake the whole GED test? No. Each subject is scored on its own, and passing scores on the current test do not expire at the national level. You retake only the subject you missed. At a test center you can retake a subject twice with no wait; after a third try you wait 60 days. Online, you get one retake with no wait, then a 60-day wait.
