Free GED math practice with worked answers

Use these 12 original questions to identify a concept to study next. Write down an answer and your steps before reading the explanation. This short learning set is not an official GED test or a scaled-score predictor.

How to review your attempt

Mark a question as correct only when both the answer and your reasoning work. For each miss, identify whether the problem was vocabulary, choosing a method, arithmetic, or interpreting the result. Rework the problem without the explanation, then try a different question on the same skill.

The 145 passing score on an official GED subject test is a scaled score. A percent correct on these examples cannot be converted to that scale. These examples are additional public material, separate from the book’s 1,000-question collection.

1. Fractions

What is 3/5 + 1/10?

A. 4/15 · B. 4/10 · C. 7/10 · D. 3/50

Answer: C. Convert 3/5 to 6/10, then add 1/10. The result is 7/10. Add equal-sized pieces; do not add denominators.

2. Unit rates

A car travels 156 miles using 6 gallons. What is its average miles per gallon?

A. 24 · B. 26 · C. 30 · D. 936

Answer: B. Divide distance by fuel: 156 ÷ 6 = 26 miles per gallon. Multiplying gives the wrong units.

3. Discounts

A $60 jacket is discounted by 25%. What is the sale price before tax?

A. $15 · B. $35 · C. $45 · D. $75

Answer: C. The discount is 0.25 × 60 = $15, so the sale price is 60 − 15 = $45. The discount amount and final price answer different questions.

4. Signed numbers

Evaluate −4 + 3(6 − 2).

A. −4 · B. 8 · C. 12 · D. 20

Answer: B. Parentheses first: 6 − 2 = 4. Multiply 3 × 4 = 12, then add −4 to get 8.

5. Linear equations

Solve 5x − 8 = 27.

A. 3.8 · B. 5 · C. 7 · D. 35

Answer: C. Add 8 to both sides: 5x = 35. Divide by 5 to get x = 7. Substitution gives 35 − 8 = 27.

6. Inequalities

Solve −2x ≤ 10.

A. x ≤ −5 · B. x ≥ −5 · C. x ≤ 5 · D. x ≥ 5

Answer: B. Dividing by a negative number reverses the inequality, producing x ≥ −5. Zero is a useful check: 0 ≤ 10 is true.

7. Slope

Find the slope through (1, 3) and (4, 9).

A. 1/2 · B. 2 · C. 3 · D. 6

Answer: B. Rise divided by run is (9 − 3)/(4 − 1) = 6/3 = 2. The rise alone, 6, is not the slope.

8. Functions

If f(x) = x² − 3, what is f(−4)?

A. −19 · B. −13 · C. 5 · D. 13

Answer: D. Substitute the complete input: (−4)² − 3 = 16 − 3 = 13. Parentheses matter when a negative number is squared.

9. Geometry

A triangle has base 10 cm and perpendicular height 7 cm. Find its area.

A. 17 cm² · B. 34 cm² · C. 35 cm² · D. 70 cm²

Answer: C. Area = 1/2 × base × height = 1/2 × 10 × 7 = 35 cm². The perpendicular height is required, not a slanted side.

10. Volume

A rectangular box measures 3 ft by 4 ft by 5 ft. Find its volume.

A. 12 ft³ · B. 20 ft³ · C. 47 ft³ · D. 60 ft³

Answer: D. Multiply all three dimensions: 3 × 4 × 5 = 60 cubic feet. Volume uses cubic units, unlike perimeter or surface area.

11. Mean

What is the mean of 6, 8, 10, and 16?

A. 9 · B. 10 · C. 12 · D. 40

Answer: B. Add to obtain 40 and divide by four observations: 40/4 = 10. The median of this set is 9, so identifying the requested statistic matters.

12. Probability

A spinner has 8 equally likely sectors, 3 of them green. What is the probability of not landing on green?

A. 3/8 · B. 3/5 · C. 5/8 · D. 8/5

Answer: C. Five of the eight sectors are not green, so the probability is 5/8. Equivalently, subtract P(green) from 1: 1 − 3/8 = 5/8.
